The taxonomy of this species\u00a0 is still under consideration, and in MOV Vol. 2 Second Edition it is referred to as Amata nigriceps group sp. (1) (Arctiidae, Ctenuchinae) It is believed the larvae of this striking moth may be litter feeders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn003bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn004bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A pristine specimen of the Showy Geometrid, Niceteria macrocosma (Enomminae, Nacophorini) was a delight to see, it flew in three times before finally settling on the sheet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn014bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn017bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another Geometrid, Circopetes obtusata, (Oenochrominae) the Grey Twisted-moth landed on the ground and was moved to an ironbark\u00a0 trunk for safety. This is a female.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn019bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also in the Geometridae, (Sterrhinae), is Idaea pseliota, the Doily Moth. The distribution map in MOV 3 shows it in central Victoria and notes &#8220;that insufficient material is available to draw any meaningful conclusions about the biology and distribution of the species in Victoria.&#8221; This record may add a little to that knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn021bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A male Tiny Tussock Moth, Oligeria hemicalla (Lymantriidae) was the second record for this locality. It is an uncommon visitor to the light, the female&#8217;s wings are vestigial and she cannot fly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn008bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The local Wingia moth species (Oecophorinae) are quite beautiful,\u00a0 the larvae feed on Eucalypt foliage. Three species have come to the light, W. hesperidella, W. lambertella, and on this occasion Wingia aurata, the Golden Leaf Moth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn043.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn043bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The big Cossid, Endoxyla encalypti, (Zeuzerinae) one of the so called Wattle Goat Moths is a frequent visitor to the light at this location, Golden Wattle, Acacia pycnantha is one of the main understory plants and food for the larvae. They often flap around upside down on the groundsheet, causing the thorax to become bald, but this male settled quickly and is near perfect condition. It too was moved to an ironbark for safety.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn009bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn010bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn013bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, something much smaller, one of a surprising number of Hookwing Footmen, Termessa discrepans\u00a0 (Arctiidae, Lithosiinae) that came in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/glenmaggie\/amn006bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Click images to enlarge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>More of the night&#8217;s moths <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natureofgippsland.org\/coppermine\/thumbnails.php?album=148\">can be seen here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>References and further reading,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Moths of Victoria Volumes 2, 3, 5,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au\/moths-imago.html\">Australian Moths.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A warm calm night was ideal to sample the moths flying in the box\/ironbark bush as February was drawing to a close, and it didn&#8217;t disappoint with two nice Amata coming in, a first.
