{"id":627,"date":"2016-12-04T01:12:35","date_gmt":"2016-12-04T01:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/?p=627"},"modified":"2016-12-27T07:57:10","modified_gmt":"2016-12-27T07:57:10","slug":"night-in-the-box-ironbark-bush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/2016\/12\/04\/night-in-the-box-ironbark-bush\/","title":{"rendered":"Night in the Box-Ironbark Bush."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first warm night of a cool spring saw the light shining in the Glenmaggie bush block, when moths and a bewildering assortment of other insects responded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/sheet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/sheetbl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first moth to the sheet was small, a member of the Tineidae, Moerarchis inconcisella.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg037bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Larger moths were soon on the scene, the Common Gum Snout Moth, Entometer fervens, female, Lasiocampinae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg002bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Streaked Notodontid, Destolmia lineata, Notodontinae, was photographed on the sheet and also on a natural background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg006bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Geometrids came to be well represented, the Pink Arhodia, Arhodia lasiocamparia, female, Oenochrominae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg010bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg011bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chlorocoma MOV Sp. (3), male, Geometrinae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg015bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also in the Geometrinae, a pristine female Tea-tree Emerald, Aelochroma metarhodata.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg014bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cleora MOV Sp. (2), male, Boarmiinae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg021bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Female.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg022bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An attractive Praxis marmarinopa, the Lepidoptera Barcode of Life has it in the Catocalinae sub-family of the Noctuidae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg024bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another fresh and strongly marked individual, a female Mistletoe Browntail Moth, Nygmia edwardsii, Lymantriidae. MOV 2 Second Edition notes &#8220;This moth is quite variable and probably represents a complex of species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/natureofgippsland.org\/mothing\/moths11\/mdg028bl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Larvae of the Picture-winged Leaf Moth feed on foliage of plants in the Myrtacaea, including eucalypts, this adult is a particularly deeply coloured example.
